Teaching Phonics in Malaysia

From my observations of teachers trying to use phonics to teach reading, the biggest problem is when teachers add a vowel sound at the end of each letter sound. That is the worst thing to do if you are working with struggling readers. Pronunciation should be short and clear.

For example, the letter "T" is said silently as in the last sound of of the word CAT. You don't really say "Catter" do you?So then, teachers should be more aware of phonology and attempt to learn proper ways of saying the letter sounds before trying to teach phonics to someone else. Many readers fail to learn to read due to poor presentation and teaching style not due to inability to read.

This is just something I feel that needs to be highlighted to all teachers in Malaysia.
