Dealing with Parents

I had a rare experience two days ago with a set of parents who have been toying about attending the interview cum consults that I do for parents. These sessions involve expert knowledge and skill because not only do parents have their concerns clarified, they also receive one to one feedback on what the situation is with the child. Case histories are collated, reports evaluated, samples of school work assessed through a miscue analysis.

These particular parents sat for 3 whole hours after postponing the appointment by an hour at the last minute! I accommodated. The child clearly was a product of poor behaviour management skills in addition to the genetically predisposed condition she has. Anyways.. as always, I spend as much time as parents feel they want with me.

What got me in the end was that, after 3 whole hours and clearly they learnt a few techniques for managing the behaviours observed during the session the mum says she did not bring money. Okay.. happens to us sometimes, its an embarrassing situation. It was agreed that she would get home and make the internet payment.

Next day,.. no payment. I waited. Then, low and behold comes this line of argument about not being aware of payments for the session!! Its on our website. I had a choice to make. Get into it or just let it be. Do u go to a doctor or lawyer or any other service provider take up a monumental amount of their time and then say you were not aware of payments for services rendered? Educated parents..

As an educator, I simply said, I am not going to argue it but if after taking up a professional's time, you choose not to pay then what is there left to say. The actions itself speaks volumes. If you did not feel you were getting anything one would have left within 15 minutes.

Just wanted to share some of the frustrations of working in this field in Malaysia.
